Five things you always have to check before buying a classic motorcycle

A while ago, we visited John Searle, our motorcycle expert. We asked him if he could share some of his knowledge with us, so we could share it with you! Earlier he gave us a few tips on how to determine if your classic motorcycle is an original. But he wasn’t done yet, he has a lot more information to share! So here are five things you have to check before buying a classic motorcycle, from our expert, John Searle.

1. Check the tyres
First, check out the overall condition. Just as people, the first impression is very important. Start with the tyres. See if they are worn or if there’s any cracks. More importantly, check if there are any broken spokes. With classic motorcycles in specific, this is not unlikely to happen. John Searle has a great tip for us to quickly discover whether any spokes are broken or not. Hold a screwdriver between the spokes, rotate the wheel and listen carefully.

2. Matching mileage
Check out the mileage of the motorcycle. Does it match the condition of the motorcycle?

3. Examine the exhaust
The third thing to look at, is the exhaust. See if it’s rusted and the chrome is in order. With a Japanese motorcycle especially, the exhaust should be in excellent condition.

4. Listen to the engine
The screwdriver turns out to be an essential item in the motorcycle workshop. “A classic tip I got from my grandpa”, John tells us, “was to listen to the motorcycle engine very carefully.” He used of course, a screwdriver to do this. “Listen carefully to all the internal parts - if it’s silent, it’s good. If you hear rumbling or knocking noises, something is wrong.”

5. Hit the road, Jack
Now take a ride on the motorcycle! If it feels good, then it is good!
