The secret of Chinese porcelain

Brought to you by Simon Breider - Expert Asian art & objects

Do you have porcelain at home? Chinese porcelain has made a tremendous growth in popularity over the last few decades. In the 17th and 18th century, the Dutch East India Company traded heavily in Chinese porcelain. They distributed porcelain all over the world. In recent years, there has been an ongoing trend that Chinese people bring the porcelain back to China.

It is important to know the difference between real porcelain and other types of ceramics. Porcelain is made of raw materials that fuse together at a very high temperature. This results in a very hard material, which is water-resistant. When you tap on porcelain, it produces a high-pitched tone.

Chinese porcelain is very popular in our auctions. Bowls, figurines and vases are often auctioned off for hundreds of euros. In recent months, we’ve had a lot of objects that have reached high amounts.

Chinese porcelain bowl - 17th century - €458

Set of Chinese porcelain cups - 19th century - €441

The beautiful designs on these special objects are not ‘just decoration’. The decorations on Chinese porcelain have symbolic meaning. The motifs on the porcelain are part of a symbolic language. It is not surprising therefore that the terms ‘to look at’ and ‘to read’ have the same Chinese character. An example of a very famous motif is the Chinese dragon, bringer of luck and prosperity.

Maybe hard to see, but in the middle of this plate there are two dragons.

Because Chinese people want recover their heritage and bring it back to China, the demand for porcelain has risen considerably. Due to the large trade in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, porcelain has ended up all over the world. Perhaps in your home? Do you have any special porcelain objects?
