9 Soon-to-be Classic Motorcycles Our Experts Advise to Invest In Right Now

It’s no secret that classic motorcycles can be lucrative investments, but where do you begin? Our motorcycle expert, John Searle, recommends investing in motorcycles that have high potential to become classics. One of the biggest advantages in investing in these motorcycles is that no more will be made and, as with most things produced in limited editions, value will only increase with time. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but if you can get your hands on one of these 9, you’ll be off to a good start...

9. Yamaha XTZ 600 Ténéré

This one’s a real off-road classic with a simple concept, beautiful execution and a great history - the 600 cc Ténéré’ guarantees a great deal of off-road pleasure. It rides just like you’re in Dakar, and that image is what made these motorcycles so popular. The models to invest in are the ones from between 1984 and 1988 with the high mudguards, single headlights and typical Yamaha colour schemes at the time: blue with white and yellow or white with red.

Our experts expect the value of this model to increase by around 146% over the next 10 years.

8. Suzuki GSX1100 Katana
Making its first appearance in the 80s, the GSX1100 Katana is still a motorcycle that speaks to the imagination - the design was revolutionary at the time. There were various versions of the Katana, but the 1100 remains the most evocative model. Suzuki built other versions in the same style with the same name, but the original is the best investment.

Our experts expect the value of this model to increase by around 176% over the next 10 years.

7. Honda CBR900RR Fireblade 1992
The CBR900RR reshaped the landscape of motorsports just like the CB750 did 23 years earlier. Our experts recommend investing in a Fireblade in original condition to save money in the long run. Because Honda only makes parts available for 20 years, any parts that need replacing will only become more difficult to find and more expensive.

Our experts expect the value of this model to increase by around 176% over the next 10 years.

6. BMW R 80 G/S
The 1981 R80G/S is the archetypal model of the GS series. Today it is still one of the best selling motorcycle series’ in the world, combining everything to become an all-terrain motorcycle. This is a smart investment because many GS owners are looking at their history and therefore the value of an early model has more than doubled in recent years and our experts say that this will only increase further.

Our experts expect the value of this model to increase by around 187% over the next 10 years.

5. Honda CB1100RD 1983
Many people would say that this is not the most beautiful Honda ever, but it was one of the first superbikes. Whether you like the looks or not, we can all agree that it’s one of the most exclusive Honda motorcycles and a shining example of what the one-litre CB series meant.

Our experts expect the value of this model to increase by around 187% over the next 10 years.

4. Yamaha YZF-R1 1998
One of Yamaha’s biggest milestones in the world of sports motorcycles was the launch of the YZF-R1 in 1998 after which it took several years for their competitors to catch up. Even today, in 2017, the design feels quite contemporary. When investing in one of these models, it’s important to look for one with original windows, indicators and exhaust. Additionally try to find one with less than 50,000 km. Anything above that will only decrease the value.

Our experts expect the value of this model to increase by around 205% over the next 10 years.

3. Kawasaki ZXR 750R
The exclusive R version of the ZXR was perhaps not one of the faster motorcycles of its generation, but it one of the best 750 cc sports motorcycles in any case. This race-oriented version has the most potential to increase in value compared to other ZXR models.

Our experts expect the value of this model to increase by around 210% over the next 10 years.

2. Ducati 900 Supersport
One Ducati just shy of becoming a classic is the 900 Supersport. Our experts advise that this is a good model to invest in before the price increases. Although there were other models aimed at the overseas markets, the 900 has the most potential for becoming a classic and increasing in value. With a new model of the Supersport being released just this year, all eyes will be on previous models again and this kind of attention will likely add even further value.

Our experts expect the value of this model to increase by around 214% over the next 10 years.

1. Triumph Speed Triple 1994
Back in '94 this motorcycle was intriguing and imposing, and that British imposition is still strong today in 2017. Copies are emerging thanks to the revival of the café racers and streetfighters, but nothing beats the original. The liquid-cooled 885 cc 3-cylinder T309 was the only version of this motorcycle with carburetors. In 1996, Triumph introduced fuel injection in the T509, but the original version is the one to invest in.

Our experts expect the value of this model to increase by around 225% over the next 10 years.

Over the past 10 years, other motorcycles have drastically increased in price. If this is any indication for the coming 10 years, values will only continue to rise. Our experts advise that now is the time to invest before prices climb any higher. Check out our weekly Motorcycles auction for a curated selection of excellent motorcycles to invest in.
