Cornelis de Kort was born in 1910 in Hoboken (Belgium). He came to Gilze through all sorts of detours and then moved to Rijen. He developed into a proficient and especially Impressionistic painter. He had his first exhibition as an artist at the age of seventeen in 1927 in Tilburg. He developed a special skill in portraying people. He has commissioned many paintings, including of Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. He also did paintings of various mayors of Gilze en Rijen. They hang in the Portrait Gallery in the Town Hall. As many as four times in the town hall there is an exhibit of his works. De Kort also got command of Mayor and aldermen to pen drawings of the four churches in the villages, to use as new year card. Also his Impressionist works of landscapes and village views are well known and sought after because of the beautiful coloration. In 1996 Cornelis de Kort passed away.
