condensed information from Wikipedia:
Previously, the horn was used in hunting. Horns were also used to pass signals, such as the post horn, signal horn and bugle. Today the horn is best known as a wind instrument in ensembles, orchestras or as a solo musical instrument.
The horn belongs to the family of brass instruments. A horn is a copper tube that begins with a nozzle of ca.17 mm diameter, then widens to about 12 cm. At the cylindrical portion the tube ends in a cup with a diameter of about 30 cm.
