Beautiful saddle of dromedary Touareg - mid 20th century - North Africa
beautiful saddle of dromadary from North Africa - leather - wood - copper brought to France in 1960 by my family
This type of saddle with cross-shaped pommel is used by the Tuareg to harness the dromedaries. Considered in the region of the Sahara as the most prestigious animals, they are used for racing and combat, and are the pride of their owners.
Quality of the harness is indeed an integral part of the reputation of a warrior and the greatest care is given to the decoration of the saddles. They are especially designed to carry the different travel bags, hanging at the sides of the dromedary.
Among the Tuareg, the emerald green of the leather obtained from oxides of copper, is a noble colour, and also symbol of protection: it is very often used in addition to the scarlet leather. The geometric patterns such as triangles are also prophylactic symbols. The Museum keeps copies of photographs of this saddle in a situation, in the 1930s,
