The work of Willem de Zwart exhibits a wide range of subjects: landscapes, cityscapes, portraits and still lifes, displayed in a naturalistic-impressionist style. He stood out in the Hague School because of his exuberant use of colour. His work shows similarities with the Amsterdam Impressionism that focused on people and city. In his choice of subjects, Willem de Zwart belonged to the Hague School, in his style and use of colour he was one of the Amsterdam Impressionists. He is also known as the 'Haagse Breitner'.
