Suitable fuels for the operation of steam locomotives were relatively scarce in Bavaria, especially because the big coal fields were in the "Prussian hinterland". In addition in Munich they regarded self-sustaining short transport routes as being of great interest. For this reason, the Royal Bavarian State Railways experimented with various alternative fuels such as wood or peat and bought a number of locomotives with the characteristic high peat-tender. This was closed off at the top to prevent any ingress of water into the fuel from rain. For supplying their locomotives, the Royal Bavarian State Railways , even harvested their own peat. However, it soon became apparent that the use of peat for the firing of steam locomotives was not suitable because of the low calorific value.
