Gaetano Pesce - Zani & Zani - Vesuvius kaffebryggare

Artist/designer: Gaetano Pesce for Zani & Zani b. 1939, Italy Title: Vesuvo Coffee Maker, 1988-1989 Composition: Fusion of aluminium, resin, and cast iron Dimensions Diameter: 13.75" x 4.5" Made by: Zani & Zani Details: Designed in 1988-1989 and made in 1993 No longer in production Made in Italy In very good condition This lot includes a history written by Pesce in Italian and English, and a copy of the original instructions In virtually new condition, never used, but missing base saucer The Coffee Maker is based on the traditional Neapolitan-style Italian coffee pot, and naturally on Vesuvius in Naples. In a New York Times Article by Susanne Slesin from 1993, Mr Pesce shows disdain for the coffee makers designed and produced by the Bauhaus. 'Too abstract and formal', he said, 'I wanted an object that spoke to me more about reality'. Mr Pesce believed that the future of design had to do with 'feeling emotions'. 'We have to give society something they need, and people need to develop a relationship with the objects that surround them', he said. Pesce had originally planned to change the colour of the resin around the peak each year that it was in production, so that collectors could date their Vesuvio.
