Nederländerna - Korps Mariniers - M1917 - Officier - Storm dolk

Rare matching numbers storm dagger (M1917) with marine corps copper number. Concerns a second model (with strap) with an extended carrying loop for the belt M.27 for Officers. Petty officers and men were wearing the soldiers belt or body strap. (see photo 2: of an officer of the Marines with storm dagger in the May days of 1940). Between 1917 and 1918, between 30,000 to 50,000 storm daggers were produced for the storm troops of the Dutch army. However, the storm dagger was taken out of service in 1924 and put into storage. In the early 1930s, 2,780 storm daggers were awarded to the Marine Corps and provided with a special marine numbering with a copper plate instead the number in the sheath as usual in the army. These were used intensively during deployment to the Saarland, in the Dutch East Indies and during the German invasion of the Netherlands in the May days of 1940. (see publication: The Dutch storm dagger - Legermuseum). After the capitulation, a large number of storm daggers was seized by the Germans. The offered dagger therefore concerns one (number 552) of the series of daggers that was adapted and numbered in the factory (Centrale Werkplaats) for the Marine Corps. For a number of officers, the loop has been extended for the wider coupling composition (M27). Both the marine and (extended loop) officer version of the storm dagger are rare compared to the 'regular' storm dagger of the Dutch Army. This officer version of the Marine Corps is a unique item for your militaria collection. Unlike the daggers that came out of the depot during the mobilization (1940), the Marine daggers were used more intensively during deployments. In the Dutch East Indies, the daggers were used as a machete when a Klewang was failing. The used state of the object is thus difficult to compare with the mint condition of mobilisation daggers from the depot. The condition of the dagger is reasonable and age-appropriate. The handle is cracked in several places possible due to moisture. The dagger shows traces of sharpening and no longer has the original blueing. The leather is in reasonable condition. On the sheath there is one spot missing (see photos) in addition, there are fractures in some spots, but not torn. In summary: a well-lived and unique version of the storm dagger, which is rarely, if ever, offered.
