Vico Magistretti - Cassina - Fåtölj (2) - Carimate
After a short time, in the immediate post war period, in which he became involved in the design of furnishing accessories, Vico Magistretti spent most of the 1950s developing a very successful architectural style.
In 1959 he designed the Carimate Club on the outskirts of Milan, and the chair he designed for the dining room of this club had a decisive impact on his career.
Although he later continued to design extraordinary buildings, Magistretti became famous when Cassina began producing the Carimate 892 chair in 1963.
The Carimate 892 chair was inspired by the tradition of simple country furniture, but respectfully going beyond it by refining it.
Much of Magistretti's success can be attributed to his idea that the good design of a product comes from the mutual collaboration between designers, motivated manufacturers and talented craftsmen.
Thanks to him, as well as the vision of some manufacturers, it was possible to create a network of expert and talented craftsmen, still active in post war Milan, who played a crucial role in the development of Italian design. Magistretti himself was the first to admit that some designs were only effectively translated into successful products because of the extraordinary skills of these craftsmen.
The design of his chair is based on the wooden chairs with woven wicker seat, popular in Europe for centuries, yet he modernised them, freeing them from the burden of stylistic historicism.
All this is achieved through his typical design process, which relies on simple but effective concepts and functional problem solving rather than stylisation.
In this case his approach gives life to a transcendent object, characterised by a clear rationality and devoid of any superfluous decoration.
The frame of the chair is made of solid beech: it has thicker legs where the seat crossbars are grafted, and directly addresses the primary structural problem of the chair by adding mass and volume only where strictly necessary.
Among the many extraordinary qualities of Carimate, there are the traditional references to conceptual simplicity that result in an intelligent and interesting design.
Carimate is no longer in production, but it was for Cassina.
These two chairs were found in the shown condition in a warehouse of the ENI company. At the time they were used in the conference room of the ENI Founder "ENRICO MATTEI" in ROME in the early 60s, a piece of Italian art history used by a company that has made history in the world.
