Antikens Grekland Terrakotta Canosan sittande figur - 11 cm
Canosa seated figure. 4th-3rd century BC.
From 320 BC onwards, Athens no longer exported pottery, and only a few figurines and vessels were produced as prizes for athletes in the Panathenaeans. Pottery from the Italic Peninsula then took the place of Athenian pottery on the Mediterranean market. Italian wares came from various centres, most notably the city of Canosa in southern Italy. It was one of the most important centres of production of this kind of statuettes, active especially in 3rd-2nd century BC.
The body of this figure is plump, with a prominent belly and a clearly marked navel, and chubby legs. The rounded face has delicate facial features. The figure has lifted his wear, showing his belly. It has probably been attached to a Canosa vase.
