Original gold coloured frame.
Condition: very good, yet a little dirty, and one of the corners has undergone a small restoration (was sprayed, see photo).
(Nijmegen 1880 - Elp 1947). Painter, draughtsman, graphic artist.
In 1899 he went to the Art Academy in Antwerp, following the footsteps of his fellow townsman Louis Roessingh. In 1903 Dozy left for Paris for an apprenticeship in the workshop of F. Humbert. Here he befriended the youthful Georges Braque and acquainted Picasso.
In 1918 he became a member of the Groningen art scene and befriended the Groningen painter Johan Dijkstra. Spirited they painted the (farmer's) landscapes in Groningen and Drenthe (Dutch provinces) to retain the memory of simple country life. He made a living as an illustrator for schoolbooks.
His home in Elp was a safe house for Jewish people during WW II. He was jailed in 1943 in the concentration camp Vught (The Netherlands). Much weakened he founded "De Drentsche Schilders" (the painters from Drenthe), a predecessor of the Drents Schildersgenootschap (painters society of Drenthe).
