Adorned in a kimono with these kanji characters, the figure of oiran (high class courtesan) from the Edo period is depicted seated, holding a book. However, this piece harbors a secret; when reversed, it reveals an intimate moment between her and a male figure, a surprising element that reflects the shunga art tradition. The piece bears the hallmarks of time - with minor wear, staining, and hairline cracks on the back of the book. There is a noticeable chip on the corner of the kimono, and regrettably, the part left hand of the figure is missing and the doll's neck has been repaired.
