An amazing, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) presents an elaborate Tosa School 土佐派 genre painting set against a backdrop of gold leaf, capturing lively celebrations across various sites and seasons during the Edo period, likely set along the renowned Tôkaidô road 東海道.
The streets teem with life and energy. People from various social classes are shown savouring the pleasures of establishments that provide scenic views, delightful treats, tea, music, and more. Additionally, they are seen engaging in acts of reverence at shrines, enjoying picnics amidst nature, or embarking on leisurely boat rides on the water. These diverse scenes are encased within rich gold leaf clouds adorned with rippling ovals in relief.
Watercolour and ink on gold leaf and paper. Surrounded by two silk borders, a thin dark-silver one and wide brown one with a square pattern. Framed by a black lacquered wood with protective hardware engraved with scrolling foliage.
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century).
