Ancient Egyptian Steatite Scarab - superb
Circa 1070-332 BC - Third Intermediate Period to Late Period
This steatite scarab amulet presents a finely crafted representation of a dung beetle, featuring a small head and meticulously folded wings. The scarab is longitudinally perforated, allowing for suspension and the flat underside is decorated with a geometric pattern.
In the symbolic realm of ancient Egypt, the scarab served as a potent emblem of regeneration, protection, and divine transformation. The beetle's association with the sun god Ra emphasized themes of creation and rebirth, aligning the scarab with the daily journey of the sun across the sky. Egyptians believed that the scarab beetle, which often encountered rolling balls of dung, mirrored the sun's continuous renewal and, by extension, the cyclical nature of life and death.
