A fine and well-preserved Egyptian steatite scarab amulet, from the Hyksos period, with finely detailed incised features. The scarab is pierced longitudinally for suspension.
Above and under the central line there are 3 Ankh symbols, the middle largest Ankh is connected to 2 Papyrus stems.
The scarab is inscribed with a symmetric arrangement of hieroglyphs, not meant to form words but chosen instead for their positive meaning. Such compositions are particularly prevalent on design scarabs of the Hyksos period when Egypt was ruled by foreign rulers.
The Ankh is one of the most famous and widely used symbols of Ancient Egypt, representing magical protection. Many of the gods of Egypt are depicted bearing an Ankh to represent their vivacity and immortality.
The papyrus stems symbolize continuance of life and vitality.
