Very rare Roman Legionary bronze dog tag (identification tag) with inscription:
VTER FELIX LEG VII
MAR -LVN- MVL / * IVLIVS * INN
Good-luck wishes, especially utere felix ('use [this] happily') were quite often inscribed on valuable personal possessions such as jewellery in the late-Roman period.
In this case a good luck wish for a soldier in the 7th Legion.
Legio VII Gemina was one of the two legions used in Caesar's invasions of Britain, and played a crucial role in the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC. At one point Caesar's Legio VII was disbanded, and it's veterans settled at Capua.
Roman dog tags were received by each soldier at the moment of joining the Roman legion, the Roman Army Recruits, and were called 'signaculum', the seal.
The signaculum of the Roman soldier was carried in a leather pouch suspended around the neck.
