Kopp och tefat - Porslin - Slip, Blue & Copper Red underglaze - Kina - Kangxi (1662-1722)
A rare set of early Kangxi period cup and saucer decorated with slip, blue & copper red underglaze depicting prunus flowers and magpies. The base of both cup and saucer are marked with an Lingzhi mushroom within blue double circle.
Magpies are bringers of joy, often in the form of married bliss. They are usually depicted in pairs. When combined with plum blossom, as here, they can have sexual connotations, but can also mean ‘happiness up to your eyebrows’.
Provenance: Private Dutch estate.
