He various artist names including Soshōsai, Shōko, Rokudō, and Shōkawa-in. Hailing from Edo, he was adopted by Kano Seigawa-in Yōshin as his mentor. He succeeded the family business and became the 9th generation of the Kano school in Kobikicho. Serving as an official artist for the shogunate, he eventually attained the rank of Hōgen, like his father and grandfather before him, and adopted the artist name Shōkawa-in. In addition to his official duties, he also attempted to meet the public's tastes by undertaking impressive projects such as thousand-sheet paintings. His style adhered closely to the traditions of his family's school, while also delving into the study of Chinese painting, leaving behind masterpieces in the genres of portraiture, flowers, and birds.
