The Chushingura book was first published in 1719 on the 17th. anniversary of the Ako samurai`s death with the purpose of honoring their bravery. This is a 1916 (Taisho 5) volume with woodblock illustrationsof the samurai.
The Forty-Seven Ronin, a group of masterless samurai, were allowed to honorably commit suicide rather than be executed as criminals. Their deed has been celebrated in numerous stories, plays, and films as a model of loyalty and courage in the face of injustice and tyranny.
