Amazigh - Wooden wedding contract - 1920
Originating from the Anti-Atlas region in Morocco these wooden Arabic wedding contracts were used by the Amazigh (Berber) tribes. As there was no paper available, these documents were noted on wooden panels. Some of the wedding contracts were legalised by the authorities with a stamp that says 'Control des actes' in red ink. The texts are written in Arabic (sometimes the names of villages in Berber) with ink (smeg) made from the hair of goat.
Bought in situ on a field trip to Morocco. These antique wooden manuscripts are in reasonable condition. Measuring: (Big one) 22 x 5,5 x 1,5 cm, (Medium one) 18,5 x 3,5 x 1,8 cm and (small one) 16,2 x 3,8 x 1,8 cm. All are from around 1920-1930.
