On 5 July, sixty-one-year-old Tina Turner, on her way from Zurich to the United States, gave her second European concert in Paris. As the Stade de France is, by its very nature and vocation, a venue for sporting festivities, the show by rock's "granny" was preceded by waves of applause - olas - designed to spark off goals and successes. Between the entrance of the star and the end of the first part - John Fogerty, ex-leader of Creedence Clearwater Revival and author, in 1971, of Proud Mary, one of the major hits of the tandem Ike and Tina Turner - arms were raised in impatience, appetites whetted. The stands were full, the lawn sparse; the stadium, configured that evening to accommodate 63,000 people, held 56,000, according to Tina Turner's record label, EMI.
Tina Turner wears black stilettos. The inside of the needle is red, which is more erotic than any punk sex romp in the world. Never X, never vulgar, Tina Turner, who was once a battered woman and a symbol of unbridled sex, has captured the essence of carnal love: rhythm.
