This first volume of the Ukiyo-e Style Series features works by about 15 early ukiyo-e artists, including the renowned Hishikawa Moronobu's "Mikaeri Bijin 見返り美人," as well as actor portraits by Torii Kiyonobu and bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) by Kaigetsudō Ando, Okumura Masanobu, Nishimura Shigenaga, and others. Narasaki Muneshige (1904-2001) was an art historian who was active from the Showa to the Heisei era. He was involved in the publication of ukiyo-e magazines before World War II and established the Japan Ukiyo-e Association (Second and Third periods), the predecessor of the International Ukiyo-e Society, serving as its chairman among other roles. Additionally, shortly after the war, he published "Hokusai Ron" (Discussions on Hokusai) and continued to excel in the field of Hokusai studies, contributing to positioning ukiyo-e within the academic realm of art history. The Narasaki Collection, gathered through these research activities, contains valuable art and historical materials for art history research, and the Sumida Hokusai Museum houses approximately 480 items from this collection.
