Gaja is today a winery that has almost 100 hectares of controlled property vineyards in Piedmont alone. The Gaja winery was founded in 1859 in Barbaresco, in the heart of the Langhe, and has always been recognized as one of the symbolic names in the production of Barbaresco. From the founder Giovanni to Angelo Gaja, this family has always sought quality. Piedmont is one of the most suitable regions for the production of great wines. Here, Nebbiolo often takes on the contours of poetry. Angelo Gaja, in the 1960s, had the merit of renewing traditions. This meant importing new techniques such as reducing production per hectare, greater control of the fermentation temperature, careful use of the barrique, and the use of longer corks. Gaja has thus been able to keep up with the times, without falling into the mistake of fossilizing in the wake of tradition. A success, that of Gaja, built with intelligence and intuition, inherited from the rigor and sacrifices of its predecessors and developed and consolidated in recent decades thanks to the formidable leadership of Angelo. Gaja has built around itself the image of a strong and essential brand, symbol of the greatness of Barbaresco and of a wine that knows how to tell the poetry of its territory in the glass. The wine 1998 saw climatic conditions in the Langhe characterized by intense heat and prolonged drought: the grapes, produced in more limited quantities and with a limited sugar percentage, gave rise to wines of great structure and balance, capable of a long period of aging. The assembly of grapes from 14 vineyards gives a complete and balanced wine, an authentic Barbaresco that is particularly fruity with excellent tannic structure and acidity. Intense and concentrated in garnet colour, it boasts a nose of great purity, fruity and spicy, deep, crossed by notes of currant, cherry and black cherry, coffee beans, cocoa and blueberry jam. Remarkable olfactory definition and vigor. Even in the mouth it is a wine of superlative extraction and balance. It is powerful and decisive, but also juicy, soft and modulated in tannin. A Barbaresco from a great vintage can age in the bottle for more than 30 years.
