- The glass-making technique that the Romans had perfected was so refined that it is still used today in the traditional Murano glassworks in Venice, Italy. This technique made it possible to create vases with extremely thin and refined glass walls, transforming glass from a functional product to a luxury product. This technique was then revived by Islamic workshops at the height of their technology with the Abbasid and Umayyad kingdoms during the central centuries of the Middle Ages. This glass was so strong that many items survived completely undamaged just like this ointment jar.
