THESSALY: In mythology, Thessaly was the homeland of the heroes Achilles and Jason, and of mythological creatures and peoples like the Centaurs, Lapiths and Myrmidons.
THESSALIAN LEAGUE: confederacy of tribes in ancient Thessaly, located in the Thessalian plain in Greece. The Thessalian army, under Philip V of Macedon was defeated by the Romans in 197 BC. The Roman victory brought a systematic change of the political boundaries and increased the Roman influence throughout Thessaly. Under Roman control, the Thessalian League gradually increased in size and power. As a loyal ally they played a significant role during the Roman civil wars.
The seat of the league was in the largest Thessalian city, Larisa, and it continued to exist even after Thessaly became part of the new Roman province of Macedonia in 146 BC.
