Never framed, never exposed. - Andy Warhol, born as Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died on February 22, 1987, was an American visual artist, film director, and producer. He was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement and is considered one of the most important American artists of the second half of the 20th century. His works explored the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s. Warhol’s art was a major shift away from Abstract Expressionism, focusing instead on images and techniques taken from popular culture. He used a technique that simulated benday screening (a dot pattern used by engravers), outlining areas of primary color with thick black lines. His work was both a critique and a celebration of popular culture, and he often used irony and parody in his pieces. Warhol’s artworks have been offered at auction multiple times, with prices that have reached up to 195,040,000 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting was for “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn”, which sold for a staggering 195,040,000 USD at a famous auction house in 2022. As for his “Cow” series, it was the first in a series of wallpaper designs he created from the 1960s to the 1980s. The cow was chosen by his assistant, Gerard Malanga, upon the advice of the American Pop Art dealer Ivan Karp. The pair experimented with vibrant and unexpected neon colorways between 1966 and 1976, with the cows created as wallpapers for Warhol’s exhibitions. The Cow series represents Warhol’s formal effort to introduce the production of wallpaper into his creative repertoire while experimenting with screen printing. Artists of similar importance: Basquiat, Hockney, Lichtenstein, Miro, Banksy, Brainwash, Delaunay, Nara, Soulages, Lagasse, Ramos, Lautrec, Klimt, Matisse, Hirst, Chagall, Koons, Haring, Indiana, Mondrian, Groening, Richter, Monroe, Kusama, Murakami, Testa, Villemot, Oldenburg, Hopper, Ripolles, Wesselmann, Magritte, Jenk, Orlinski, Wille, Rizzi, Manara, Thiebaud, Cappiello, Rothko, Dalí, among others.
