Original oil painting by Karl (Carl) Moon that was given to our family by the artist and his wife Grace. Along with the painting, which is an illustration from Moon's book "Lost Indian Magic", Included is the book inscribed by the artist/author to my grandmother, which includes the plate illustration of the painting.
In addition to the painting and the book to which it belongs, I inherited three other books by Moon and his wife, all inscribed to my grandmother or great-grandmother. The other three books are "Painted Moccasin", "The Runaway Papoose", and "The Flaming Arrow". Moon won a Newbery Medal for "The Runaway Papoose" in 1927. This collection includes the painting and the four books.
The painting has minor damage (small pock marks), and needs proper cleaning/restoration, but is otherwise in good shape and in its original (pine?) frame. The books have wear and tear to their bindings, but pages are in generally good condition.
Studying photography right out of high school, in 1903 Moon moved to the Southwest, where he began to paint and photograph Native Americans in New Mexico. His striking portraits soon began to attract national attention, and President Theodore Roosevelt even invited him to the White House to discuss his subjects. In 1907 Moon moved to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, where he photographed for the Fred Harvey company.
Karl (Carl) Moon's work is owned by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Museum of Metropolitan Art, and the Getty Museum. He is considered a significant documentarian of Native American tribes (Hopi, Navajo, Pueblo), and his photography and paintings have been well-regarded by collectors.
