Berber pottery is decorated with geometrical, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic symbols, reminding motifs of tattoos and jewellery. T
Like a woman, the pottery is “ornamented” with symbols which will protect the owner against evil spirits and ensure him the love of his beloved ones, as well as fertility.
Originally, symbols enabled a sort of traceability of the identity of the village, the tribe... etc...
With the arrival of the Arabs in the 7th century, the Berbers kept their animist beliefs and practised a personalised version of Islam, reflected in their diverse arts and customs.
The motifs of snakes, butterflies, scorpions, flies, birds, etc... and the geometric patterns (squares, rectangles, crosses, triangles, diamonds) still exist nowadays.
