FREDERIC DE VERNON: AN EARLY 1900-th FRENCH MEDALLION
20TH century 18K Gold medallion, pendant made by famous French medallist, sculptor and engraver Frederic de Vernon (1858-1911). Medallion is oval form, moulded in relief to the centre with the praying Madonna, a row of rose-cut 17 diamonds forming her halo, against a graduating blue translucent plique a jour enamel background and enclosed by 31 calibre-cut sapphires, signed "F. Vernon", with a 16 diamond-set pendant hanger.
Provenance: Frederic de Vernon is most known as a French medallist, he also produced the French Olympic bronze medals in 1900. When Cartier set up their design studio in 1906 in Rue de la Paix, Paris, Alfred Cartier purchased some quantity of religious medallions made by Frederic de Vernon and produced by Felix du Val. This may be one such example. Also, one of his works is a thimble offered to Queen Wilhelmine by President Kruger of South Africa for her wedding.
