Copper replica of the Capitoline Wolf in good condition, on slightly chipped marble base, the legendary she-wolf feeding the twins, Romulus and Remus, that in the legend founded Rome. When Numitor, grandfather of the twins, was overthrown by his brother Amulius, the usurper ordered that they be thrown into the river Tiber. They were rescued by a she-wolf who cared for them until a herdsman, Faustulus, found them and raised them. The Capitoline Wolf is hosted since 1471 in the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the Campidoglio (the ancient Capitoline Hill) in Rome, Italy.
