The Fontaine des Innocents, built on the occasion of the solemn entrance of King Henry II to Paris in 1549, was originally a loggia built at the corner of two streets, with two arcades on one street and one on the other. Jean Goujon decorated it with light reliefs that evoked the nymphs of the waters, thus reviving the ancient tradition of the nymphaeum. The rippling of this marine world compensated for the low water flow from the taps. The Louvre Nymphs adorned the base of each arcade.
