REPLICA OF THE DESICCATED HEAD AND PARTIAL SPINE OF PUBLIUS QUINCTILUS VARUS The desiccated, partially burnt and brutalized head and partial spine of Publius Quintilius Varus _ Spiked and displayed by the Cherusci tribe following the battle of Teutoburg Forest, Germania. The disaster that shook Rome in 9 AD, where 15,000 - 20,000 Roman soldiers were killed. An alliance of Germanic tribes ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions and their auxiliaries over a period of just two days. On the second day the Germanic tribesmen overwhelmed the Romans and began a mass slaughter. With his army disintegrating, Varus committed suicide by stabbing himself with his gladius, rather than be captured. This is a depiction of Varus severed, partially burnt, brutalized and spiked head which would have been displayed by the Cherusci . It is presented here on a wooden stand with metal plaque. Made mainly from Wood and Polystirene. Height : 49 cm (19 1/4 in) Width : 16 cm (6 1/4 in) Depth : 33 cm (13 in) This is a hand made item from the vaults of Spurgeon's Odditorium Display and handle with care.
