The Bavarian Series S 2/6 is a 4-cylinder steam locomotive built by the company J.A.Maffei of which only one was built. The locomotive was built in 1906 for the Bavarian railways K.Bay.Sts.E. and was allocated the Company Number 3201. These locomotives were used for the express train services. Development and Deployment: The Bavarian Series S 2/6 was designed and built in a relatively short time. In December 1905, Maffei received the commission and on May 3, 1906, the locomotive was handed to the K.Bay.Sts.E. The locomotive of the Bavarian Series S 2/6 construction series built by the company J.A.Maffei is a 4-cylinder locomotive designed for the express train services. On 1 and 2 July 1907 a test run was performed on the Munich to Augsburg route on which an S2/6 train of 150 tonnes was hauled at a speed of 130 km/h. On a large part of the route it even achieved a top speed of 154.5 km/h. The Bavarian Series S 2/6 was able to haul a 360-tonne train at a speed of 120 km/h and do so on an incline with a gradient of 5% at a speed of 85 km/h. The tender could hold 8 tons of coal. The Bavarian Series S 2/6 was initially stationed at the Bahnbetriebswerk in Munich. In 1910 the locomotive was moved to the Bw Ludwigshafen and was deployed on the Pfalzbahnen, where it was used for the express train services between Ludwigshafen and Straßburg. It was quickly nicknamed the "Zeppelin". In 1922, the S 2/6 was stationed in Bavaria and thereafter in Munich. As from 1923 the locomotive was stationed in Augsburg. With the Deutsche Reichsbahn the locomotive was re-classified as the Series BR 15 in 1925. The change in number did not actually take place as whilst at Maffei for maintenance it was decided to decommission the S 2/6. This locomotive then wound up at the Verkehrsmuseum in Nürnberg. Livery types used: Ex-factory the S 2/6 was delivered in an unpainted polished grey colour of the boiler and cylinders. The curved plate at the front of the locomotive at the buffer beam was a bare, shiny polished steel plate. The engineer’s cab and tender were painted in a dark grey colour. At the Pfalzbahn in 1910, the S2/6 locomotive was given a brown and violet livery. In the era with the Reichsbahn after 1920, the locomotive was given the DRG livery that was an olive green and dark green. During the 1st and 2nd World Wars, the locomotive probably remained in grey livery. After 1922, the chassis and wheels were painted red.
