This toast holder was designed by Christopher Dresser and manufactured by Alessi, Italy.
Designed in 1878 by Christopher Dresser, one of the most radical and prolific designers of the 19th century, as well as an influential writer on the subject of the decorative arts. Deeply dissatisfied with expressions of English design, he emphasised the importance of functionality, simplicity, and mechanical skill, convinced that industrial and scientific progress would lead to an entirely new art style. In particular, he promoted a rational and scientific attitude towards design that was based on the use of good and cheap materials combined with essential decoration. He was one of the first designers with professional experience in machine production, and he was arguably Europe's first industrial designer. Although much of the original documentation has been lost or destroyed over time, Alessi has republished some of Dresser's tableware designs. The project has resulted in a deeper understanding of Dresser, who was the true forerunner of the design era for modern industry.
