海地艺术家雅克·切里(JacquesChéry)的挂毯“树的福音” - 麻布

The painter Jacques Chéry is a Christian from Haiti who lived in exile under the Duvalier regime. Through his "primitive" style art, he seeks to illuminate the world today with the light of the Word of the living God. This painting illustrates God's covenant with his people. Like the stained glass windows of medieval cathedrals or modern basilicas, it retraces the history of the salvation of humanity in a vibrant catechesis. See: 1. In the centre at the top: The creation of Adam and Eve, the animals, the trees with succulent fruit; and the man who digs the ground according to his call to "cultivate the garden". 2. At the top left: The Ten Commandments given to Moses and reprised today (1948) in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - or Doa l'om in Creole, to mark that human dignity must extend to all nations, even the most impoverished. 3. In the centre on the left : While humans destroy the earth by over exploiting it, Jesus in the desert resists the temptations of wealth and power (symbolised by the home and the car) to restore peace among all living beings. At the bottom: These three scenes depict situations in which human rights are violated: the right to a homeland, where inhabitants have to flee by boat on a raging sea; the right to live in peace, where victims (and among them Jesus himself, wearing a red gown) suffer the ravages of soldiers and shells from tanks and planes; the right to dignity and solidarity, rather than being trampled on by each other in order to climb the social ladder. Notice that in each of the scenes of darkness, the artist has inserted a light of hope: in the boat where people are panicking, a passenger remains serene, like Jesus on the Sea of Galilee; in the midst of the massacres, a person wearing the emblem of the Red Cross cares for a wounded man; and at the bottom of the pyramid of fierce competition, a hand is stretched out to pull out of the waves someone who is in danger of drowning. A small glimmer of hope always flickers in the depths of our despair... 7. In the centre on the right : Jesus in the Temple frees the doves and goats and overturns the tables of the money changers. By upsetting the order established by a religion that has become imprisoning and commercial, Jesus announces that he is the true Temple of God, a place of life and freedom. 8. At the top right: The great banquet for humanity is set, where people of all races sit and where the abundant food is served by children, the little ones, "the first in the Kingdom". 9. At the centre of it all: Christ on the cross, lifted up like the bronze serpent in the desert. He hangs on a living tree. A tree whose roots plunge into the darkness of the sea and whose leaves reach up to the sky. Its colourful fruits and young shoots symbolise the promise of "life in abundance". A rainbow, the "sign of the Covenant", frames the painting as a sign of God the Creator's eternal approval of his creation. The vibrant rainbow shines over the entire earth, with all the people, animals and plants. The rainbow is the sign of God's covenant with mankind, and therefore of his love for the world. He invites us to build it and make it better every day.
