In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a Titan. A figure inherited from the " fire transmitter ", Prometheus is best known for having stolen the sacred fire from Olympus to give it to humans. After the victory of the new gods led by Zeus over the Titans, Prometheus goes to the chariot of the Sun with a torch, hides a firebrand in a hollow stem of a common ferrule and gives the "sacred fire" to the human race. Wrathful of this disloyal act, Zeus condemns him to be tied to a rock on Mount Caucasus, his liver devoured by the Caucasian Eagle every day, and growing back at night.
Several elements of his legend such as his punishment seem to have been borrowed by the Greeks from the legends of the Caucasus.
