This small device, used for drawing, "allows you to copy nature" as indicated in its instructions from which the previous presentation is drawn. The invention of the first model, which dates back to the early 19th century, is due to the English physician, chemist and physicist William Hyde Wollaston.
Essentially, it consists of a small prism attached to the end of a telescopic bracket. The bracket is fitted with a clamp foot for fixing to the edge of a table. The camera lucida thus formed makes it possible to superimpose, by aiming through the prism, the image of the subject one wishes to draw and the sheet of drawing paper. To reproduce the subject, simply follow its virtual image with the tip of a pencil.
