This beautiful collar candlestick is made of copper and has a special silhouette. The model with collar is also called a Heemskerk candlestick, named after the Dutch navigator Jacob van Heemskerk. The candlestick is suitable for a thin candle. The collar is not only decorative, it also catches the candle dripping. A beautiful antique item with a beautiful story!
In 1596, the Dutch ship De Windhond of Willem Barentsz got stuck at Nova Zembla. Some of the crew, led by Van Heemskerk, managed to return to Amsterdam after a difficult and long winter. More than 250 years later (around 1875) the remains of their stay were recovered by archaeologists on Nova Zembla, including various collar and skirt candlesticks with a model like this.
The condition of the candlestick is fine, although the collar has had a repair to secure it better, which can be seen at the bottom. Composed.
