Rack - c. 1710
From the collection of a former Italian museum of torture.
The torture rack was used a means to force a confession from a victim. Used in various forms since before Roman times, the rack would be used to tie the victim down, allowing the executioner or interrogators to inflict on the victim anything they pleased, such as torture by torches, whips, pliers, or water. The rack could also be used to stretch the victim through the use of ropes or chains attached to a wheel. Later racks became more refined, allowing for the dislocation of a victim's joints. The use of such instruments of torture declined following the mid 18th century.
