Carved out of a bone, most likely from a giraffe found in the Serengeti by the Maassaï.
The lion spike was used by the young boys of the tribe as they had to roam the savana's and in order to gain and prove that they had reach manhood they had to kill a lion . The lion spike was with enormous courage placed into the mouth of a charging lion , it was in self-defence that the lion then was killed.
The carved lion spike has gained over time a beautiful patina .
Length - 33.5 cm - Wide - 13.5 cm - Weight - 400 gr
This club, o-rinka, was polished by the Masaai from the bone of a giraffe and was used to throw at an enemy, horizontally circling over the ground, or also to deal the final blow to a fallen enemy. The bones of the giraffe, due to their density and lightness, were excellent for making these weapons. The Maasai took bones of wild animals they found had died in the Savannah and made beautiful utensils from them, following the natural shape of the bone and polishing them. A true art form emerged, described in "The Art of the Maasai" by Gillies Turle.
The original white bone of the baton has beautifully patinated through time and use.
Length - 40 cm - Wide - 4 cm - Weight - 250 gr. A rare find.
