This is a stunning large Japanese Satsuma vaas of the highest quality from one of the Top decorators "Kozan". Hight: about 31 cm
The ovoid body with a broad cylindrical neck and rolled mouth, the whole decorated in overglaze enamels and gilding with a panel of figures on a rustic road by a tea house with a temple precinct in the mountains beyond, the reverse with another panel depicting what appears to be the Heian Shrine near Kyoto, both on a ground of manji-diapers and scattered chrysanthemum blooms, the shoulder with a key-fret band, the base bears makers mark "Kozan"
There were many levels of quality in the ceramics produced by the pottery factories of the Satsuma area and this is amongst the best, from one of the top decorators. This present piece is exceptional and is probably from a time after Kozan left Kinkozan and set up his own business.
