In 1935 stenographer Marius den Outer developed the Tachotype; a machine with 27 keys that produced unabbreviated text and would allow for 750 characters per minute to be typed.
In 1938 he developed, based on the same principles, the Velotype, in which the number of keys was reduced to 22.
The text produced on the Tachotype and Velotype, the velogramme, had to be transferred to a standard typewriter by a typist into a plain text.
He started to make his design for stenography more accessible for blind people.
During WW II, it was used as decoding machine for receiving messages from England.
