A Japanese staghorn 'katabori netsuke', Edo (1603-1868), ca 1800-1850, ca 5.6 cm. high, 1.9 cm. wide and 1.7 cm. deep.
Shaped as a standing 'sennin' (ascetic hermit) in a long gown with large headgear, presumably Tekkai (who had the ability to disconnect his soul from his body and to send it into the sky; after a long absence his soul could no longer find his body and took therefore resort to the body of a dead wanderer) leaning on his stick, the top and base as often with this material closed with plugs, natural line in the material.
