Date of printing on the title page 1567, on the last sheet’s colophon 1566. Second edition of this very interesting military treatise on fortification. It’s extended compared to the first edition of 1564, was made by the same printer, and is profusely illustrated. Girolamo Cataneo (1540–1584) was a mathematician and military engineer who served as a soldier to Charles I of Spain in Lombardy, in the state of Milan, and later as a military engineer for many aristocratic families in northern Italy such as Prince Vespasian Gonzaga Colonna. As a writer, he was noted for his fortification and military works, many of them printed in Brescia. Minimal bookworm hole on the side margin, skilfully restored. Stain on the upper margin.
