In 18th century Japan, the long road between the old capital of Kyoto and the new capital of Edo was marked by a series of post stations intended to give travellers and officials temporary respite on their arduous journey. The Tokaido road became an expressway for people in the Edo period (c.1603-1868) and economically benefited the nation. An occurring theme for ukiyo-e artists, the Tokaido road was used as a basis for many print series, giving way to creativity and interpretation. In this one, every station of the road has a corresponding famous kabuki actor of the day.
