For a welcome change this is a complete set of 12 damask linen napkins with either C.S. or G.S. embroidered initials in light relief. This implies that the the napkins were either never used or rarely. Napkins were a a very popular marriage gift for the newly weds and so many sets were given. They ,together with the matching table linen, bed linen, bolster and pillow cases all disappeared into the "Trousseaux armoire" and very often never were used and instead much more simple linen was used for daily. They were however very important items and at the time they had to be recorded and registered by the Notaire into the "marriage act" and in the event of a divorce at least everything was recorded. The initials are sitting in a garland of leaves. The top is framed with a small Greek Key and in the Greek Key are small compositions of both flowers and leaves. In each corner is what looks like a black bird. This is a first for me and something I have not seen before and certainly adds to the beauty of the design.
