It involves embedding mother-of-pearl, which has a pearlescent sheen, into a base material or lacquered surface and then polishing it to a fine finish. In the realm of lacquerware, thicker pieces of shell are referred to as "Raden," while thinner, more delicate pieces are known as "Aogai Raden." This Natsume is beautifully adorned with an all-over pattern of grass and flowers on a black base.
