Ceremonial court figure with detachable head. China, Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644 A.D.
The Ming Dynasty ruled China from 1368 to 1644 A.D., during which China’s population would double. It was the last imperial dynasty of China ruled by the Han people, the majority ethnic group in China. Known for its trade expansion to the outside world that established cultural ties with the West, the Ming Dynasty is also remembered for its drama, literature and world-renowned porcelain. The dominant religious beliefs during the Ming dynasty were the various forms of Chinese folk religion and the Three Teachings – Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.
A hollow-moulded ceramic Ming male court attendant who is wearing a typical high court cap, standing on a square base in a solemn pose. He holds an object with both hands. Detachable head.
It presents a polychrome made through the technique of engobes and glazes of Sancai style. This style, whose name literally means "three colors", is based on the use of two glazes or lead glazes, copper oxide green and iron honey color, complemented by the ivory color of the engobe of the base.
